If you’ve been thinking “we really need to book family photos this year,” you’re probably also wondering when. Fall tends to dominate the conversation around portrait season, but the truth is every season in Calgary has something genuinely beautiful to offer — and real tradeoffs to consider.
Here’s an honest breakdown of all four seasons so you can decide what’s actually right for your family.
Fall (September to Mid-October)
This is peak season for a reason. The light is soft and golden, the colours are extraordinary, and cooler temperatures mean kids are comfortable and energetic without being overheated. For outdoor sessions, fall delivers a palette that photographs beautifully in almost every colour scheme.
The honest tradeoff: everyone else wants fall too. Availability fills up fast — often by late summer. If you want a fall session, early August is when you should be thinking about booking.
Winter (November to February)
Winter is dramatically underutilized as a portrait season in Calgary, and I want to change that. A light snowfall in the foothills creates a quiet, still quality that you simply cannot replicate any other time of year. There’s also something visually compelling about a family bundled in warm layers — textures, cozy knits, and natural colour palettes all shine in winter light.
Studio sessions in winter are also ideal. The controlled environment means no weather worries, and the warmth of a studio session can feel incredibly intimate.
Spring (April to June)
Spring in Calgary is complicated — it can be muddy, windy, and unpredictable, or it can be a glorious stretch of green with early wildflowers. The light in May and June is incredibly beautiful, and the longer days give you more flexible timing for golden hour sessions.
Spring is a natural fit for maternity sessions when the bloom and growth feel thematically connected to the season of pregnancy. It’s also a quieter booking season, which means better availability.
Summer (July to August)
Summer sessions require more strategic timing — midday sun is harsh and unflattering. But early morning sessions before 9 AM or evening sessions starting around 7 PM offer warm, low light that’s nothing short of gorgeous. Summer also means full foliage, long days, and families who are relaxed and in good spirits.
If you have young children who do best in warmth, summer morning sessions can be magical.
The Bottom Line
The “best” time for your family photos is the time that fits your life and your kids’ temperaments. What I’d encourage you to do is stop waiting for the “perfect” season and simply book. You can work with any season — what matters is having portraits of your family, in this chapter, before another year slips by.
